Basic Education

Basic education refers to the basic opportunity to receive training in literacy, arithmetic, language, problem-solving abilities, knowledge of daily life, attitude and values. Basic education equips people with the knowledge and skills to meet different requirements, whether survival, work, or personal care to meeting one¡¦s personal potential or participating in community affairs. The contents and approach of basic education must suit the local society and culture. Therefore, these vary with time and location.

Basic education is a basic right for everyone. However, there are still 125 million school-age children around the world deprived of schooling. Another 150 million drop out of school before acquiring basic literacy, and as many as two-thirds of these children are girls. There is a vicious circle of poverty and deprivation of education. Poverty leads to deprivation of education, which in turn leads to poverty. To break this vicious cycle of poverty, one of the foremost tasks is to develop basic education.
