Export

With the development of transportation, selling goods to other countries has been a common trade practice. Have you noticed that various types of products sold on the streets in Hong Kong are mostly imported from foreign countries? These include food, clothing, electric appliances, flowers and books. You may think that the people involved directly in the growing or production of these goods are leading a wealthy life.

On the contrary, many people producing raw materials or the final products are poor because they have no knowledge about the changes in market prices and are subject to exploitation by intermediaries throughout the production, transport and distribution process. Though many products will be sold to customers at rather high prices, what these people receive are negligible returns. For example, we in Hong Kong will pay one dollar for a banana which a farmer in the place of origin has sold to an exporter or wholesaler at less than 10 cents.
