Development

"Development" is usually defined as the process through which an individual or a group seeks new skills or resources to improve living standards. This definition emphasises the economic aspects of development. However, the "development" of a society or a group should also emphasise the utilisation of individual and group potential and the improvement of capacities, such as the capacity to manage and protect their own resources and participation in decision making of a society, etc.

"Development", mentioned by development workers, usually refers to "sustainable development". It means development towards a more equitable society, with greater participation from civil society, and more protection of the environment. It also involves a rational allocation of resources, substitution of renewable energy for non-renewable energy, waste reduction, maintenance of ecological balance, improvement of education, and promotion of gender equality, etc.
